Well both backstory and future twists; perhaps I’d better explain.

Lionel Raggis is an International Investigator (imagine Interpol but with more power amongst participating countries) who, as Cadmen becomes more involved in worldly affairs, acts as a partner to him. However, Lionel is secretly a public alias of Zalal, the series big bad (Zalal goes around in a helmet and voice modulator all the time so nobody can really tell). However, Zalal originally was a guy named Shaph back in the Bronze Age times and was a rising star amongst the Paladins in training. However, he let it get to his head, and got in a fight with his friend, Name Pending during a thunderstorm. NP got the upper hand and right as he was about to strike Shaph down, a divinely sent flood swept through the area washing Shaph out to the shore of a sea some distance away. While intended to give Shaph time to cool his heels and think about what he’s done, he instead grew bitter about it and threw his lot in with the devil and has since been a foe to God, albeit behind the scenes. Granted, I would need to write some other foreshadowing showing that Shaph is Zalal and let the reader piece it together, but that’s still down the road.
