My one main piece of advice that I don’t think has been said already, is to make sure that it is geographically logical. Look at how a river flows, and what sort of trees would grow alongside it. Are you really going to have a temperate forest next to those mountains? Is it a desert on one side of the mountain range and lush on the other because of the rainshadow? (Woah, all that stuff you learn in geography is useful???)
Along with this, if there is part of your world made in the way it is due to magic, make that make sense. For Chosen by Fire, my world, Miritain, was divided into nine hexagonal masses of land a weirdly formed river. In the center of each sector was a pillar that was left behind from the Magic years. That’s all to do with the magical history of the world.
