I’ve done Camp NaNoWriMo 5 times the traditional way and once as a rebel. I’ve won every time, mostly because I’m too stubborn to lose (but also because I have pretty decent time management skills and the ability to say “No, I’m writing” to people who ask me to do things). I find it super helpful as motivation, though recently it’s been more of a way to get a story started and get far enough into that story that I know what I’m doing than as a way to actually finish a story in a month. It also gives a little more legitimacy to saying “Not now, I’m writing and I have a deadline” to people who try to interrupt you. And if you start something new for it, which I always used to, it can be a nice change of pace. (That was the other reason I always did it; I’d usually been working on the same project for months, and I was ready for something else.)

So, yeah. I definitely recommend it, and I plan to do it again this year, though it’ll be as a rebel again. (NaNo rebel = doing NaNoWriMo with a different goal, or with a story started partway through, or something like that. I’ll be working on a set of short stories.) If you want to add me as a NaNo buddy, my username is Leilani Sunblade.
