@kate 🙂 I think you pretty much just summed up the whole Andy Griffth show. That show was fun but it really had class. I can think of a lot of people that are still watching it.
A movie that I always found amusing was the Princess Bride. Not that I watched it for the humor, but there are some beautiful moments of comedy and irony in it. And I think one of the best things about it was the unexpected-ness of the scenes. Such as when the kidnappers cut the rope and Wesley doesn’t fall, and the leader exclaims, “He didn’t fall!! Inconceivable!”
The swordsman turns his head to study him with a perplexed expression. “You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.” he remarks.
The swordsman could be focusing on how to make their enemy fall to his death so they can get paid, but instead he is questioning their leader about his word choices! And the colorfulness of the characters. For example, you have this giant of a man that has made his living fighting people and yet he loves rhymes. Makes them through the entire story. Personally I don’t find rhymes intimidating. At all. But each of the characters had something very unexpected about them. The swordsman after training all his life to kill his father’s murderer now has no idea where to find the man and is using his great skills simply to get paid. The royal prince, who is supposed to be noble, actually plans the kidnapping of his bride to be and her murder just to start a war with another country. Miracle Max the medicine man makes a pill he claims will bring the dead back to life, yet doesn’t believe it will even work.
The movie and the book are filled with the unexpected being done well. Including funny quotes that are used by some people who don’t even know what it’s from. The whole thing is fantastic. 🙂
