Here’s my attempt at foreshadowing:

Lilith led Maddi over to a cutting board. “I hope that this will be more interesting, now that I have your company here,” Lilith smiled.

“I’m not that interesting,” Maddi shrugged. She took the knife that Lilith offered her by the hilt and deftly began cutting the carrot.

“You’re good with knives,” Lilith blinked at the blur that was Maddi’s hand, and the now-in-pieces carrot.

“I’ve had a lot of practice,” Maddi replied shortly. “Do you have another carrot?”
