@wordsmith I would definitely allow you to explain that. The vague ideas and thoughts I had about it have pretty much now been cemented by that explanation. No bowing, but that was very helpful, thank you. I hope you don’t mind if I take some of what you said and put it in this document I keep of advice and writing advice and sermon notes and things I want to keep to think over.
I just have to say it, I’m sorry if it’s embarrassing, because I appreciate qualities like this so much in a world where it is slipping away… Whomever you end up marrying is going to be a very privileged girl. I can tell you think about things, really think about them, study them, and try to live them, rather than just going with things other people have fed, you truly think and believe in things on your own. And that’s amazing.
A conversation I had with one of my cousins about this a little – He is a wonderful Christian young man, and very much possesses a chivalry like the one you described. But he also pointed out that sometimes he does feel a little too pressured by people with fairy tale conceptions of knights and chivalry to be perfect. He explained that he felt some girls he knew at school expected him to be a perfect gentleman all the time, with every single thing and never let them carry a thing or open a door, or do anything. And while it is true that gentleman should be gentleman all the time, if they slip up or make a mistake, I don’t think girls should ever be down on them and angry for a human failing. Guys are our protectors and as you put it vanguards, our servants, not our slaves. It’s not like we’re helpless to open a door once for ourselves. I’m really trying not to say that we’re so strong and independent and don’t need a man’s help, or that they don’t need to do that all the time, but just that it won’t kill anyone if he forgets. If a girl never had to open a door on her own, that is wonderful, it’s just not the end of the world if she doesn’t.
Plus I really like the point of what you made in reference to a man being in a higher position but recognizing a woman’s worth and respecting her and humbling himself in a way to show the respect he has for her. It’s why I really love a necklace I received from one of my friends, a necklace from a Christian music group called For King and Country. They have a song called ‘Priceless’ they put out, and a necklace that has an Australian penny, which has the queen on the front, because they wanted to show that one woman is worth more than all the money in the world. They wanted to show guys that girls are treasures, special gifts from God, and we should be treasured.
Okay, now that sounds a wee bit vain, but I’m sure you know what I mean. 😀
