@daeus-lamb I definitely agree!
For me, one of the advantages of writing a child character is the pure fun of it. Children are all so different that there’s so much you can do. You can go wild with their imagination, or have them come up with simple solutions to huge problems. They’re funny, endearing, and typically take up the ‘sweetheart’ role in the book (it’s cliche but it always works on me). Whether they are protagonists or side characters, they’re just loveable beings.
One of the hard parts is finding their understanding level. I tend to make younger characters a bit too smart for their age. I forget what younger kids can and can’t comprehend.
In kid’s books, I’ve noticed that they often make the bully very cliche. She steals the protagonist’s lunch, pushes them on the playground, calls them mean names in class and somehow never gets in trouble. I always wish they would add more to the bully. Give a reason behind the evil. Some kids are just rude in nature, but sometimes they have a difficult home life. Their parents are getting divorced. Their big brother pushes them at home, so they pick someone smaller to push, too. There are all sorts of reasons they could be acting up. That’s just the first thing that came to mind about cliche kids.
