I was drawn in emotionally once he started describing the music — probably because I’m a music person.

I think there was a good amount of childish emotion in there (a lot of sweet, cute instances), but it might’ve been thrown off by the kind of adjectives that are used in the narration — which in this case is a tricky subject, since we’re writing for adults. A kid doesn’t look at the world with words like “burn-callused feet”, but we’d hardly want to simplify those parts for the SE staff, because our audience is adults. I don’t know, really, but I remember this issue coming to mind briefly when I first read through it.

I think his backstory, especially involving Em, was pretty well laid out. And overall I liked it! It was wonderfully engaging.

@samuel Many Asian parents will send their children to music lessons at a very young age, so I think it has to do with the cultural mindset. It’s similar to how they often will push their kids to do well academically.
