Hey Jared,
Man, I love your ideas and website. I need more worldbuilding in my WIP, but from your website, it looks like you are well on your way.
However, over the last few years, I have found a closer niche for myself in writing high fantasy. Being inspired to write fun, Christian stories for my nephews and nieces (not unlike C. S. Lewis’ Narnia series), I set out to write a fun, imaginative adventure story that would teach them Christian virtues and morals.I am finding fantasy to be a fun way to explore larger thematic concepts. I think fantasy has had a resurgence as a genre since the LOTR movies were made. My wife and I had the privileged of getting to visit New Zealand a year before all the madness of the world seemed to surge to the forefront. We visited both the north and south islands and took a tour of the movie set for Hobbiton, among other locales. We climb Mount Sunday, the location of Edoras, and took a helicopter tour of some of the other sites in the “Misty Mountains”. Such a beautiful land for fantasy.
I am presently in the roughs of my novels too. Perhaps I should say the “weeding.”Frank Peretti got his start writing fictional stories for church camp, which let later into the “Darkness” novels and so on. I think writing for a younger audience helps a lot with learning to simplify and focus. Good for you! The analytical mind of being a math teacher helps in surprising ways as well. God never wastes the aptitudes He puts in us, though we may not see where they will manifest.
I have had to develop a regular diet for humble pie in my writing journey. Many of these younger ones here on SE are way ahead of me and I am delighted and surprised by what I learn from them by remaining open to it.
Have you heard about the upcoming Resonant Themes Summit on Story Embers coming up on April 21-23, 2022?Here’s a link to it:
Click linkIt is well worth it. I attended my first one last year.
Be sure and put your website link on your SE profile too, so it can get some more visibility. You can click on the image of any one of us, and check the profile for our sites.
I tend to keep mine low-key for now, but some of these fellow writers are already growing a following and building their audiences. Some even have newsletters, and I am gleaning those fields to gain ideas. Such a bright bunch.
The articles and podcasts done by the SE staff are a great resource and wealth of insight as well. Check out their “Blog” menu in the toolbar above.Join the groups and jump in. There are so many avenues here to explore.
Is there a particular theme that you have in mind for your WIPs?
What writers have inspired you to write in your preferred genres?
If you could write a back of the book blurb or even a succinct tagline for your current WIP, what would it be?
Which do you prefer to write: A plot-driven story or a character-driven story?
