There’s a difference between not always necessary, and unnecessary. Very few books have a double climax like that… at least in what we read. But honestly, the story was still far from being over. Even though he might have done it more elegantly, what’s wrong with a second climax? We live in a society where the peace of mind is not valued. There was a recent discussion with some adult friends of mine, who brought up the point that the majority of fairy-tales end in at the wedding, or shortly thereafter, as if that’s the end and happily ever after. In the Hobbit, he was writing a story for children… The Lord of The Rings is not a story for young children. In the Hobbit, he was showing a less frightening image of battle scars. But in The Lord of The Rings, there’s a different point.

It might feel awkward, but it really is beautiful. We’re just not used to that. You might even think about the fact that Jesus came once… and he’ll be coming again. Yes, the wonderful climax that we’d all been waiting for came, but that’s not the end of the story.

Sure it’s different. It’s not what we’re used to. But what’s wrong with it? Every time I read that book (of all three), I am closer to loving the end ever more.

So let’s not look at it the same way we do The Hobbit. This is a story for us to look at… where we are blessed with not just one amen… but amen and amen.
