@tinuviel I assume you’ve read of Beren and Luthien?

    • Yes, I have! Well, the account in The Silmarillion, not the actual new-ish Beren and Luthien book. Are you a Tolkien fan?

    • NICE! do you have a favorite Tolkien character or story arc?

    • I’m not really sure :p. I like Saruman. Like, not as a person! But as a character and the way he fits into the story.

      • Yeah, I know. He really adds a sincere twist to the plot and really just becomes an annoying wasp, in a sense. He’s got power and he’s against them, but after all they’ve been through, he’s not going to stop them from getting back home and securing themselves there (the hobbits at the Scouring of the Shire).

      • One of my favourite characters, definitely.

      • Did you know that Tolkien based Luthien off of his wife? And that on her gravestone and his be placed their…metaphorical names? On her’s: Luthien. On his: Beren. Very interesting topic, that all. I wrote a paper on him last year.

    • Yes, I did! I’ve always thought it a bit odd…but also really sweet! Their romance is actually pretty cool. Age gaps, forbidden love, broken engagements…that sounds a lot more dramatic than it was, but anywho. What particularly was your paper topic?

      • Yeah, very romantic. I watched this documentary on them that was really interesting. There was this one part (not sure if you have/haven’t heard of this) when after he got back from his part of the war, where his wife, Edith and he went to some park or woods and he sat watching her dance and sing. I heard that that’s where he got the idea for how Beren and Luthien met. Pretty interesting.
The paper was just a short biography of his life. While researching I ran across this one book called this:
The fellowship : the literary lives of the Inklings: J.R.R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams / Philip Zaleski and Carol Zaleski.
Very interesting hearing about these guys. I didn’t end up reading the whole thing, but from what I read, it was awesome.

      • Sounds like an interesting read!
