YES! *confetti* It is really fun too! (Most of the time π )
The part you said that Betas : “readers are not responsible for pointing out every minute detail. Theyβre responsible only for pointing out patterns of bad writing or large-scale things that keep a scene or character from working.”
How do you NOT point out the minute details? Specifically what should we pass over? π (And if they ask for it too, should we still do that?)
I recommend reading it through with giving comments and then take a few days off and ideas/realizations will hit you.Β π (I just learned that.) And knowing the fandoms the writer is in and complementing parts of the book funnily with references to the shows/books they like, seems to make them happy. Writers don’t really have tough skin, but for the few that do, you probably should be blunt with those who want it. π (I am trying to ask if I am commenting how they like or if I should change a style to fit better.) And a paraphrased tip from my Dad: you should probably be doing 80 % of your own writing and 20% for your friends. (Cuz I stopped writing for a bit, which isn’t always bad but ya know.)
And I believe it was an article on here that said you should pray while you are helping your writer buddy, and don’t get a big head that you “are all that” because you can figure it out (-my problem a lot of times hehe π ).
It’s actually my dream to be a professional beta reader after I have more experience (and I forget what the real term is… creative editor? ) One of my problems is scheduling my time and keeping my promises with being able to read the books after I say I will. (And being on here too… π ) Do have any ideas @maddiejay? Also, thanks for writing this!!! There were some things you said that were helpful!!
(Out of curiosity, not necessarily that I couuuld read it currently due to life,) does anyone have any books/short stories that are ready for betas? My goal is to have my book ready by the end of April/May for betas. π
