“My name is Virtus, son of Fidus. Sorry for landing on top of you.”

Brendin clasped Virtus’s hand after a moment, holding Virtus’s eyes with his piercing (yet non-hostile) gaze.  “Brendin.”  He wasn’t yet sure if the name was still his.  Actually, he hadn’t been sure of much anything for a very long time.

Brendin scoured the room once more.  As far as he could tell there were no other Mares among them.  Of course, the Mares could always appear from nowhere and attack.  They’d hunted him for months, he saw no reason for them to give up now.  He should probably leave as soon as possible to not endanger the others.

They’re soldiers…at least, some of them are.  Perhaps, if he could explain the Mares to them, they could band together to stop them?  It would be less dangerous than facing the Mares alone.  Brendin still had burn scars from his last confrontation with Cyn…

Maili would be able to make sense of this, he thought.  Part of him ached at the thought of her.  He knew the Ghostpass was treacherous, he should not have dragged her across it in the dark…

If you’d waited the Mares would’ve found you.  Cyn would’ve torn you apart.  And Maili would be killed, tortured first.  What happened was a mercy by comparison.

Brendin swallowed and averted his eyes, trying to avoid looking at anyone else in the room.  The image of bloodied, broken stones lingered in his mind.  He ought to protect these men from the Mares if they came.  When they came.  He owed that much to Maili.
