A woman (George) walked up to the counter beside Peter, flashed some kind of identification, and demanded to know what had happened.

The kid behind the counter was making coffee using muscle memory only, it appeared. He was apparently struck dumb by whatever happened, so Peter spoke for him. “Beats me, ma’am,” he glanced sidelong at her, then turned away to grab his coffee from the counter. “I just walked into this mess like you.”

“…I need coffee…” Peter heard someone stammer behind him. Reluctantly, he turned around and saw that it was that person on the floor (Sam). The one the other two (Ivancica and Levi) were helping. Peter looked at the coffee in his hand and grimaced. It was his compulsion to “help” that was always getting him in trouble. He strode stiffly over to the boy, knelt, and put the coffee cup in his hands. “Here.”

Before any of them could say anything, he stood up and went back to the counter for another black coffee.
