Ooh, beta reading! I’ve done this…. 1 or 2 times officially I guess, and it’s actually pretty fun. I love analyzing stories, themes, plots, and characters just for fun(my Youtube recommendations are pretty much all analyzations of recent films, character archetypes, etc), so getting to analyze other people’s stories is awesome to me. XD
I think one thing I’ve learned throughout beta reading for people and going over my own work is that I need to be tough–I don’t particularly like confronting people unless it’s someone I know well enough to know that they’re not going to take offense from me pointing out something, so even if I know someone isn’t going to get mad at me for doing so while beta or alpha reading(that’s kind of what you’re supposed to do), it’s still something I struggle with doing. I think I’ve gotten a lot better about it though lately.
On another note, beta and alpha reading has also helped me see how other people structure their stories and how to create better flow in my own story, as well as how certain styles/lines affect me/my reader’s emotions.
