    @michelle

    So you just want a general overview of “surviving poverty throughout the centuries.” 😛  Let’s start off with the fact that poor people always have it rough.  That’s what being poor means. 😉 So saying that it was particularly bad for poor people in the last two centuries feels a little wrong to me.  I would more likely say poor people had it bad in the Middle Ages or in the times of the Roman Empire…for various reasons…  But we’ll go back to your question now.

    The “1800s and 1900s” covers a period of 200 years, so let me put on my thinking cap and try to follow the timeline.  I’ll get back to you in a bit.  Also you’ve given me a period, but not a place.  May I assume you are speaking of America? (my particular area of expertise)  Or are you thinking Europe, (which I know less about but which @seekjustice is capable of writing a dissertation on) or perhaps Asia (in which case you’ll have to find someone other than me to help you because I know next to nothing about the area). 😛

    I’m thinking out my ideas now, but if you could answer that one question as to the place where your “poor people” live, it would help a lot. 😉
