Clem wants to prove his cousin’s innocence. He wants to do this because he feels guilty for having helped get him caught in the first place (more like complacent, but that is just as bad to him). He is also doing it because now he is under these claims of murder, and he needs to free both of them and find out what is actually going on. Deeper than that, Clem feels completely unable to figure out people, and feels he is always making the wrong choice on who to trust. This makes him unwilling to trust anyone for fear of that person being the wrong person. He still ends up trusting people, and which makes him feel worse. He trusted his cousin, felt that trust betrayed (he thought) and is just now finding out that he was the one (he feels) that broke the trust.
Please note that I am entirely new to writing from this character’s perspective.
Clem surveyed the bits of evidence sitting on his counter. The key must be here. What was he missing? Just the desire to hand this pile over to the proper figures. A small smile wavered on his lips. Well, if you hadn’t killed the person that was supposed to take this junk, maybe you wouldn’t have to worry about it. Clem shook his head and wandered about the kitchen, avoiding the creeping guilt. He had not killed that man! He hadn’t. No. Just… No. Well now you know how your cousin feels. He stopped back by the counter and picked the stuff up piece by piece. What if the answer was not here?
