She could pick up the wildly cheery attitude from watching others, but only near the end of the book does she really understand it. Before then it is just an act.

People could slowly realize there was something not right about her cheeriness and then eventually figure out what it is.

She could realize that being sad all the time wasn’t good, but also that it didn’t make her a bad person that she had so much darkness in her. Like that the people from the hopeful planet would still accept her, even if she was pessimistic. (likewise people from the hopeful planet could realize that ‘not all tears are evil’.

I like the idea of it being something that the planet learned, then it was passed down. Cool backstory there.
