I nod. “I know what you mean, nicknames are tricky things, I once knew a guy that kept calling me Rach. Just Rach. Never liked it. It just never seemed to fit. But when I had to be called by my middle name to defrienate between myself and a different Rachel, it never bothered me.”

Sipping my tea, I collect my thoughts. “I find my writing is something that evolves as I grow older. It is hard to find your niche. Some writers write just one genre, while others write more than one and do it well.

I’ve tried my hand at several different genres, not saying I do any of them particularly well, but right now I’m working on that steampunk story about the detective’s assistant.”
I feel myself making that face, sort of like a tight smile, when I find something draining I need to do. Wonder if it’s as noticeable as it feels.

“It’s been a real growing experience as a writer, first of all because it was the first time I wrote something I knew someone else was going to read. And second of all, because I apparently didn’t know anything about the steampunk genre. I thought I did, but it ended up being more learn as I go.

So tell me more about this fostering story?” I ask curiously. “When you say fostering, you mean like a foster family?”

While I’ve never known one, I’m a fan of the concept of foster family. Families are precious things everyone needs.
