@chalice Oooh that’s a great question!! It’s definitely art and it’s definitely creative! I draw both realistic and in more cartoony styles and I love both. Even though I really appreciate realism and I think it’s incredible what people make, I do enjoy looking at a painting more when I can see that it’s a painting. If that makes sense xD I can appreciate the amount of work someone put into it, but if I can’t see the difference between that and a photograph it can be a little boring sometimes? Once again agreeing with you that it is art and it’s absolutely incredible what some people are able to create! So in my case I love realism! But I enjoy seeing that the artist made some choices that are different from the photograph they’re working on. Show me those brush marks, watercolour spots and pencil lines!

As for tracing, that has always been ‘cheating’ in my mind XDD But when just practicing it might be helpfull for some people? As for favorite artists, I’m always inspired by Glen Keane but for more traditional work I love William Bouguereau, Vermeer or Rembrandt. I find Ali Cavanaugh’s watercolors mesmerizing too!
