@katy-walker I’m halfway through The Dragon Prince. So far, the plot seems solid. I’ve noticed clear, defined plot beats– Bethia’s arrival, Robert’s arrival, Altaio deciding to go to the pool and make an attempt to un-curse himself. However, something huge is missing: Altaio’s emotions. This character could be fascinating. I write mostly fantasy, so I can’t provide the different genre perspective you want, I’ll give feedback on the overall plot and, if I like it, I’ll go through it again with some suggestions for improving the narrative.

Thanks again for everything, I have almost everything I need to get back to wrestling with my story. *sighs* one more thing.

With the idea of Jane having once been adopted, what are some reasons it would fall through. I mean, I can think of some reasons like, everyone dies. But that’s drastic, cliche, and obvious. So, any ideas?

Generally, I think stories should begin close to the “moment of change” so there is some time showing the “ordinary world” before your main character goes into the adventure of the plot. Backstory can be sprinkled in bits and pieces throughout the story.
