I love the idea, but unfortunately have probably not seen or read much that others here would have. Just based on the books and movies others reference, which I tend to not have even heard of before, much less seen or read. However, if anyone wants to talk Winnie the Pooh, Shirley Temple, or Murder, She Wrote (tv show, not the books), count me in!
More seriously, I have been sticking to mysteries when I read (well, except occasional breaks to read the Mitford series by Jan Karon) as I not only enjoy them but want to expand my knowledge of the genre I write in. Currently I am reading At Bertram’s Hotel by Agatha Christie and The Restoration Project by Carole Jefferson (it’s a Christian mystery, happened across it in the waiting room of the hospital). I have The Lights Under The Lake (a Scarlet & Ivy mystery) by Sophie Cleverly planned to read next, and am also trying to study/ analyze The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (a Flavia de Luce mystery) by Alan Bradley via a method I learned about by reading an interview or something from Mary Higgins Clark, who is renowned for her suspense novels and said she learned how to write well by analyzing her favorite book (Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier) to see just how the suspense was built.
I would suspect most would prefer studying something within their genre(s) of choice, to get even more educational bang for their time buck.
