I have a playlist of instrumental songs that put me in a mysterious/ spooky mood. The one that I like to think of as my series’ theme song is Danse Macabre, and I play it more than other pieces. I have liked it for a long time, but after hearing it used as the opening music to Sherlock Holmes radio plays (more recent ones) I thought it was perfect for setting the mood and just had to start listening as I write. I also have some sound effects like creaking doors and ominous bells mixed in.

I usually find it difficult to write while listening to music with words, even though my mind likes playing scenes of a made up story whenever I listen to music. But I do love listening to soundtracks and really old music, particularly Phantom of The Opera and music by The Andrews Sisters while brainstorming or doing other planning work. Forever Be Sure is very inspiring, too, especially their King of the Night album.
