The tree and villain ideas could easily work together, I think. But maybe just one person is guarding the tree instead of a whole village? I think the smaller and more personal the “ordinary thing” can be, the better. I also think that if there’s a war, we should downplay the action and battles and maybe focus on politics or something, just because a war is the most obvious and expected “dramatic situation.”

Another idea I thought of (all of @k-b-writer ‘s are great btw):

A brilliant scientist scrambles for a solution after finding out that a huge meteor is on a collision course with Earth. But she discovers how selfishly and impersonally she’s trying to save the world when her unsuspecting sister calls and the scientist’s toddler niece talks about her day.
