I will readily admit that I may be an outlier here. As I’m revising my pet-project novel, one of the things I’ve started to pay attention to is the chapter breaks and length of chapters. In the original draft, each chapter was around the 1,000-2,500 mark, and it the overall appearance became rather gangly. In my revisions now, I’m working at maintaining an average of around 8,000 words. More things actually happen in each chapter, and I have to really work at making each scene count. There’s also not a chapter break every four pages! This does, however mean, my revision work lately has been a lot of chapter condensing, and a ton of new scenes to be written.
