I had scanned most of the perimeter of the room, reaching out with my senses for any weaknesses, when the boy with the dark eyes went on fire. Literally.
My eyes landed on him as he comforted his friend. Fire danced all over his body, licking at his dark hair.
The boy turned and caught my stare. He walked over and nodded at me quickly. “Pick a wall,” he said.
I studied him silently, the flames covering him like a second skin. I moved my gaze down to his hands, which also had flames in them. The heat that came off him was warm but not blistering. There was something else in his eyes now – grim determination. Still though, it held that sadness.
Who was this strange boy with the flames?
Then he glanced towards the others. “If there’s not a door we’ll make one. Anyone who has an ability can start chiseling out a weak point. Malvat can ram it down then?”
Looking past him I was greeted with the sight of – a dragon. I had not noticed him before. Because the only things I was looking at was the floor and this boy.
“Everyone else, gather anything that could prove to be useful. Let’s see how long the castle wants to keep us if we start tearing it down.”
I shook my head slightly. It would be futile. I had examined the walls myself, reached out with my senses. They were all too thick to destroy. I tried to calculate how many feet thick the walls were and came away with nothing. We would need the full strength of two dragons to get us out of here.
The fiery boy tried to move past me. I held out my hand, stopping him, making sure not to make contact with those flames. He stepped back, looking surprised.
Would he understand me if I signed? Doubtful. Very few people understood sign language. Instead I motioned towards the walls, and shook my head.
He stared at me quizzically. Sighing, I motioned again, more aggressively this time. Surely he would understand what I was saying. That I had scanned each of the walls, and I could find no weakness whatsoever.
