Amelie was completely taken aback by that… that word. Her voice caught in her throat as she tried to protest, “You’re- you’re sorry?” She leaned back hard and suddenly in her chair. She didn’t hear the rest of his words. Just that one. That one word no one had ever directed to her.

She glanced at the picture and might have nodded, but by then her mind had wandered away. What does it mean to be sorry?
