I’m thinking along the lines of @silverclaw-bonnetfolly … maybe the character refuses to accept the fact despite everything but then finally is pushed into accepting it and falls into 1.) depression, 2.) anger, 3.) or a cold, shallow apathy, numbing everything by pretending she doesn’t care.

Which ever you do, it would probably effect her whole life and the way she approaches any other friendship from then on.
