I don’t know if I’ve ever written down a backstory and kept it–most of my characters end up being rather difficult, and so I end up changing their backstories as I get to know the character better.

In addition, I think a lot of my backstories end up playing into the character arc–and the theme–quite a lot. The way I see it is a backstory does for a character arc like childhood does for a person–allows us time to grow up and learn, gaining strengths and weaknesses in the process. The insecurities my character gains from their past carry over into how they see their world in my story. I love how many possibilities this gives me when it comes to my characters/plot.
