Usually I come up with a character first and then base a backstory off of his actions. Or if I need someone to be secretly prince or princess (I need 52), then, well, BAM! a prince or princess, with the same backstory as the rest of them.

Usually I actually write out their backstories to be part of the story. When writing from a character’s POV, I usually do consider their backstory to add in some detail and inner conflict.

But usually also backstory isn’t that important, unless I’m at a plothole in the middle of the story or I’m bored. But it’s fun to make up backstories, thoguh it’s hard to keep all of them from being tragic.
