@evelyn It depends…I used to write only poetry that rhymed, and it would be about anything (I wrote one about my brothers, one about my best friend at the time, one about jewelry–leave me alone, I was like eight). I tend to write more free verse now, both because I find it easier and also because it fits more what I’m writing about. As an example, here’s the one I mentioned in my previous post. I don’t think making it fit into the confines of a rhyming poem would work well with it.
Don’t let the darkness
Drown you out, my love.
You have light in you yet,
The quiet whisper of hope
In the face of a raging storm.
Dawn follows the night,
As joy follows sorrow.
You are the dawn.
You are the hope.
And even though you weep,
Your tears wash away
The dirt and filth of the past.
You are the dream.
You are the spark,
Setting a fire that no thing,
Living or dead, can burn out.
You are strength,
And you are weakness.
You are pain,
And you are healing.
You reach out your hand,
Hoping to find
Something to hold on to.
You stretch out blindly,
Searching, grasping,
For anything.
Anything.
And in the darkness,
You find light,
A ray of hope
In an endless sea of despair.
And you realize
It is enough,
Just enough,
To hold on
Until morning.
