What I Read – Not really this past week so it might be cheating, but I finally got around to reading Mistborn: The Final Empire. Pretty innovative magic system there that was kept pretty consistent throughout. Definitely had a few weakpoints, though.
What I Wrote – A technical paper for research. Actual story-wise, I’m trying to focus on two things:
1. How exactly Zalal’s going to try and achieve cultural dominion, and how to make that into stakes that readers would be interested in. Haven’t had time yet to read your recommendations on that @taylorclogston , though I might have that soon.
2. Trying to plan the series character arc for Cadmen. I’m set on the idea of Cadmen having a truth to offer to the world- however, he himself still can grow from his starting point:
– He’s frustrated with how so far it seems nothing’s changing in the world despite ~10 years of serving as a Paladin/policeman
– He’s frustrated with how people, both acquaintances/colleagues and some of his friends, are content with the world and their own personal, spiritual mediocrity (e.g. with people just “accepting” how the world works/not wanting to grow in character)
– He’s frustrated with himself and how he’s seemingly not having impact on any of the above
-While he himself still is faithful towards God, he is starting to (internally) grumble and wonder if God’s been pulling a fast one on him/if his whole “being the Paladin” is utterly pointless
However, I’m having a hard time trying to concentrate the above into a solid phrase/word. It seems to me that the best way of planning things out is to have the first half of the series as Cadmen’s Positive Arc, with the second half as Cadmen’s Flat Arc.
@taylorclogston Re: Raskolnikov flipping the lid, I liked it in part because I think it showed just how little he understood the ramifications of his Ubermensch philosophy. We see in Svidrigailov a foil of what happens when someone is able to subdue their conscience. You might like The Brothers Karamazov, though it seemed underwhelming to me (probably because it seemed like the pacing took forever).
@ariella-newheart Wait, did Zahn make more Thrawn books than the original three?
