This is something I’ve been thinking about with Zalal. Something I’ve wanted to do with my series is have a villain who is completely morally bankrupt, because that’s how all those who reject God eventually end up; and since Zalal’s been around for a few milennia, seems like the perfect demonstration. Yet I’ve also wanted to show:

    a) He didn’t become so wicked completely; this is a result of a slow and gradual rotting over time. Whatever scruples he has over time get rejected by his decisions.

    b) Just because he’s completely bankrupt doesn’t mean he always does the bad thing; however this is a result of pragmatism. For example, he’s all too willing to encourage do-gooding in his associates if it means that it furthers his plans.

That said, I want some of his inner associates to have sympathetic points:

    – Mrak, leader of an international league of assassins, is truly passionate for justice but is willing to make himself judge in place of God.

    – Seth, leader of AutonoTech industries, truly wants to help humanity with his innovations but believes there is no cost too high to pay.

    – Antikraman, Prime Minister of Fluscia, truly wants to prevent atrocities from happening but is willing to shed innocent blood to make a point.

The question is, then, having other underlings who aren’t so sympathetic.
