I think that, along with what @cassie-hartfinh and @evelyn was saying, characters can be used as mirrors: you can put yourself in another situation or see aspects of that person in yourself, and it brings questions— what would I do if I was in their shoes?

It lets you see things in yourself that are usually in your blind spots and shows you their consequences.
