@emma-starr, I’ll add onto what Josiah said. There are a lot of successful plotters and pantsters, but one advantage of plotting things out first is that it forces you to learn about story structure and apply it to your story. So, my piece of advice would be that if you decide to go without an outline, pick up a craft book and study some story structure. I recommend Go Teen Writers (not just for teens) by Jill Williamson and Stephanie Morrill or Plot vs Character by Jeff Gerke.
