Hi everyone!

I have this story idea, and basically a large part of the story is built off of the whole devastated-single-father sort of trope.  He and his wife were super in love and they had a little boy and everything, but then she died in a fire.  One of the main drivers of the story is his disillusionment afterwards and the way he starts becoming closed off to his son and life in general because of being haunted by her memories etc.  My question is how do I make this all happen without it being cliché or unrealistic, if it’s even possible?
