Evie
Evie cringed. She already hated Liorah.
The girl talked too much. Way too much.
And she was also so unbearably stuck up.
Actually, trying to list her flaws would take at least a week.
Evie pinched herself.
She didn’t want to be that person, and she could already feel her mental dialogue going south.
Stone-face time.
She rested her hand on her dagger, contemplating whether she should return Quin’s knife.
Yeah… I don’t think so. Last time he got near a weapon he tried to use it to kill himself.
Instead she pressed herself against the wall and tried to disappear.
Niarok glanced at her, eyes full of sympathy as Liorah screamed insults at Lorcan.
He understood.
Evie sighed and quirked a half-smile just to let him know she was grateful. He got the message. She could tell.
She also hoped he noticed how much she enjoyed having at least one person who understood what she was thinking and feeling without having to say it. Words were too cumbersome and time-consuming and vague. Words were so vague.
She huffed and leaned back against the wall.
Qatar appeared next to her.
His face was stony ice. His eyes were… more stony ice.
Evie resisted the urge to sigh.
Impenetrable fortress.
Like her.
She could respect that.
“Thanks–for keeping him alive. His life isn’t his to take. That’s for me,” Qatar said quietly.
Evie froze.
“You… you want to kill him?” she asked quietly, not sure if she was hearing things or if she even wanted to know the answer.
She knew the feeling of wanting to kill someone.
It usually ended violently.
Very violently.
Kathreya was the only one who stopped her.
She didn’t want to think about what would have happened if she hadn’t.
“Thanks–for keeping him alive. His life isn’t his to take. That’s for me.”
