In The Ashtown Burials all magic is treated as evil. Lawrence’s older sister Hyacinth was labeled a witch as a child because she was born with a gift to life out of dead things, and opened forbidden Ways (portals though trees and stuff) as she was trying to escape a real witch. The Order never found her, but it was decided that if she ever showed her face again she would be executed. (N. D. Wilson’s trilogy The Hundred Cupboards is actually about her son Henry)

All in all, The Ashtown Burials doesn’t really have a ton of magic. One of the villains, Radu Bey, last of the Dracul Gin, leader of the Ordo Draconis, uses it to some extent, I think. Arachne (one of the two non-villain transmortals) also weaves different kinds of enchantments (or something like them) into her spider silk. There are a few magic relics, but the only one really of any consequence is the Dragon’s Tooth, a mere shard of the actual tooth. Whoever is holding it is immortal, and it is the one thing that can kill the immortal and transmortaled (mortals that became immortal).
