Ah! I don’t know how I’m going to make it through this writing battle without shedding a few tears. But that’s okay. I’ll help where I can.

First, Gabby’s article is excellent.

As far as symbols, we could use something the character who dies loved. Like muffins. Or a certain song. Or a purple stuffed bear. Or a bridge.

Maybe flower that they always cared for when they were alive and the flower dies as they do?

Perhaps this will spark some more ideas. 😛
