I recently had a convo with a writerly friend about book settings and one thing they mentioned was that readers may get bored if a book keeps the characters in the same setting for an extended period of time.

We were actually discussing the setting in one of my novels. 🙂 The entire first book in the series takes place on an island.

So here’s the question. Or three.

Is it possible to keep the readers interested in the story if it takes place in the same setting the entire novel? What are ways to keep that interest? What can a writer do to keep the same setting fresh and intriguing?
