If my gut feel is anything to go by, I think the more typical approach would be a war or something, but I’d love to see something more unique!

Stealing from one of my own world building concepts on a story I hope to write soon: what if in this culture, no one ever writes anything down until they’re dying. If they’re about to die, they’ll write something down (e.g. “tell Susie I love her”) and it’s kept precious by their loved ones. But a traveller from another country comes, and they’re a writer or a mapmaker or whatever, and they’re writing stuff down all. the. time. and the other people are just always so concerned for them because surely they’re about to drop dead any moment now if they’re writing?? 😛

Something really unique like that would be fun to do. It’d catch the eye of the judge and stand out from the others hopefully.
