Well, from what I know about self publishing, you tend to make more money off each sale than if you went traditional. However, your initial expenses are going to be more. Since there is a stigma to self publishing because of all the horrible things people have published it’s crucial to have a great cover, excellent blurb, formatting, grammar, etc. you are also completely responsible for any marketing costs, where a traditional publisher will be more help with that. That being said, traditional is way faster and takes out the need for pitching to agents, then to publishers, etc. I know many traditional authors who have self published along the side, so it can’t be a horrible option as long as you do your homework and put in the proper effort. I would just strongly urge you to be sure your story is ready for the world. Make sure other people have read it and given feedback—not just people who will automatically tell you they love it *cough* like a grandparent *cough*. Hiring an editor can be very helpful too. Don’t skimp if you go self publishing route, because people will notice right away, likely tear you apart in their reviews, and you won’t sell much.
