I think our mystery ought to have some creative point, a theme, a good point. As a good mystery it should make the reader think, and throw something at them that they didn’t see coming.

I think murder mysteries are overdone to, in fact if you look at nearly any mystery novels at the library they’re pretty much all about murder. Which is interesting because not even all the original Sherlock Holmes stories are about murder, there’s missing people, stolen items, faked crimes, blackmail, loved ones acting strangely, cases where someone was attack but gets out okay, random odd events such as finding an unexpected item in a weird place or a weird encounter with a stranger, hunting for some sort of treasure, crime organizations, or political conspiracy mystery. And of course the ‘impossible crime’ where the mystery is all about how this thing was done, you know like a locked room mystery. And creative motives for why the crime was committed.
