Hi guys,
I think there is an Endgame topic somewhere out on the general forum… but that’s a long ways from here AND WE NEED OUR OWN.
SPOILER WARNING: Everything here is a spoiler. JUST ASSUME. You read past this point, the Endgame will be spoiled.
(Has anybody seen it? Does anyone want to talk about it?)
Instead of gushing about all the wonderful, positive, grand storytelling in it, I’d like to pick on something that nobody has mentioned that I’ve seen. Some of the characters got… a little out of whack, and I think the story missed out on it’s potential.
1) Pepper Potts has always been Tony Stark’s voice of caution. She doesn’t like the superhero gig. She has always wanted him to stop. In a poorly timed promise at the beginning of Infinity War, she finally got what she wanted from Tony: “No more surprises.” So, naturally, when she suddenly pulled a 180 and nudged Tony toward creating the time machine needed to reverse the Snap, I thought she had stepped out of character. She never, as far as I could remember, advised Tony to step into the line of fire in all the MCU movies she’s been in, and suddenly that changes? I thought if she had stayed the course and applied pressure on him to stay (especially since THEY HAVE AN ADORABLE CHILD NOW), that would have intensified the tension as Tony struggles with the decision and strengthened the story. Thoughts? (Also, the whole thing with Rescue in the final battle really destroyed Pepper Potts’ character for me. That’s just… not her. ESPECIALLY as a mother now. Not every character has to be a superhero. Some can just be super people. Thoughts on that?)
2) What is the Hulk’s thing? It’s rage. The Hulk has rage issues. I think one of the best shots in the MCU is in the first Avengers film at the start of Hawkeye’s attach on the helicarrier when Banner is turning into the Hulk and he casts one quick, apologetic glance at Natasha before going full Hulk and trying to kill her. That, I think, is the Hulk’s strongest moment as a character. There are so many layers of emotions to that one shot, it’s condensed and powerful. Fast forward to Endgame: The Hulk is now Professor Hulk and basically… he’s less interesting? Now I understand (sort of) what the idea of Professor Hulk was supposed be, but I miss the old Banner/Hulk struggle (which for me was a great allegory for our own struggle with our sin.) Instead of trying to explain why I think it would have been better to maintain that struggle in Endgame, let me resketch an Endgame scene for you.
Right after the time travelling, everybody is back on the time travelling platform, and everybody just realized that Barton came back alone. Professor Hulk, who has had a relationship with Nat for quite a few movies now, loses control of himself and gives in to his besetting sin and rushes at Barton. Barton, heartbroken at watching his best friend die, just stands there and takes the beating while the other Avengers try to pull the enraged Hulk off of him.
How much more powerful of a scene would that have been rather than everybody just looking at each other sadly and walking off? Making sure to stick to characters, and not bending them to suit the plot, can spice up your stories and keep readers on their toes.
OTHER THAN THAT THOUGH (and the weird and statistically impossible girl power moment) ENDGAME WAS SO GRAND.
Thoughts?
