@pursuewisdom Well, I can’t speak to the TV show, I’ve never heard of them and I have no idea what they are like. They sound interesting!

The reason the books bothered me was the impropriate and wrongful actions Horatio Hornblower takes. It’s not the mere fact of sin that turns me off (I would be one of the last ones to say characters should be perfect…) it is the book’s (and Horatio’s) approach to it. He never learns and continues to indulge in adultery and repeat over and over while the book essentially says, its okay! He can’t help it. And he needs it in his life to be a true man and live to the fullest. Come on! He’s just a guy so don’t blame him or judge him.

That isn’t to say I did not enjoy the first one, but once the books continued to casually tell the story with that in it (one of the book’s plot even centering completely around it…) and putting it in good light, they increasingly disgusted and frustrated me, and so I decided the books were not for me.

I hope my explanation makes sense…
