That’s a great question! And on that I’m not entirely sure how to answer directly… but I’ll do my best.

Start out with a very specific aspect of the personality you want to work with. Ingrain that aspect into your character. And the throw them into the world. Think about how that single aspect will react to one character vs another. Play with this and build your character around that aspect, working in different parts here and there, but not quite so strongly.

This way you can play with the idea of writing personalities. It’s not a hard and fast, but may help you analyze. Work it so that you can really feel this character. You can feel him. Then see where that carries you.
