The first thing I’d like to say is…that’s a very broad question! 😛 It’s very hard to answer as it is phrased now.  Could you give a little more context?  Like, are you writing something for a specific period, a specific place? or are you writing about “poor people throughout history? or what? 😉  If you could narrow it down a bit more, or give me something to go on it’d be easier to answer.  If you’re just asking for general information, we could have a discussion about it.  I’ll bring in SeekJustice, who I usually have these conversations with.
