    *gasping with excitement*

Ok, so, guys, you should probably know that I kind of struggle with world-building?? But the history I’ve created for Mortality (my gaslamp fantasy), while being fairly simple, has done sooooo much to unlock world-building ideas and plot points and I’m super proud of it!!

    So, here we go:

Mortality is set in an alternate universe; a world almost exactly like ours, except that one thing changed in the past (or so the story goes).

Legend tells that the angel assigned to act as psychopomp to the humans of this world fell. And he didn’t just fall, he fell Satan-style, literally trying to become God. He used the Authority Over Life and Death he had been granted to put humanity on its knees before him.

In response to this, the legends say that God ordered his Halo (which contained his Authority Over Life and Death) and his Scythe (which gave him power over spirits) be stripped from him, and he be bound in Gehenna. God then cursed the Scythe so it could only be held by humans, never to be carried by angels again. And He shattered the Halo and Scythe into forty pieces, which He gave to forty humans, bound to carry out the duties of the Angel of Death for a century under strict rules of conduct.

Since then the duty of Grim Reaper has been passed on every century from one Reaper to the next; forty Reapers walk the earth, as human as you or me.

At least that’s the most popular explanation in supernatural circles. No one really knows where the Grim Reapers come from, and tbh their all too scared to ask. :’)
