Ah, okay. I’d better get to this before I leave today. I’ve already put it off long enough.
So the world in my books is an anarchy. Some characters are always saying about how because it’s an anarchy, what they do doesn’t matter, anyway. But the other half of my cast of characters are trying to find (or at least wishing) for the Crown Prince to return, and restore order and peace and goodness upon the land. But little do they know, the Crown Prince is the most wicked of them all…but that’s a story for later.
I should add, I think, that while I do try to fill out character sheets, that’s not usually what happens, since I have such a large cast of characters. Instead, I have a name, an image in my head, and when I write, what they’re like comes out of the pen. Though I should go back and develop them more…
For my last couple of works I’ve been trying to tie characters, plot, and theme together, and I must say that for a few of them, it’s been quite successful. But-
I see now that this is about belief systems, not theme. My bad.
So anyways, as I was saying, belief systems are not something I generally think about for my characters. I try to keep them all in the morally grey part, but some occasionally stray into the dark and evil, or the light and good. I try to give them all at least a moral standard to follow. Later in a story I’m planning when the MC brutally arranges the deaths of the two villains, well…some of the other MCs lose respect for him, and tell him off.
There’s been something I wanted to try lately, and that’s the little chart thing that sorts people into:
Lawful good/Neutral good/Chaotic Good
Lawful Neutral/True Neutral/Chaotic Neutral
Lawful evil/Neutral evil/Chaotic evil
Some pins on Pinterest have given me ideas on how to sort them.
Lawful: Rules matter more to me than individuals
Chaotic: Individuals matter more to me than rules
Good: Other people’s well-being matters more to me than my own
Evil: My own well being is more important than other people’s
Neutrals: My opinion of what is more important is determined on a case-by-case basis.
And, uh, I don’t have much time left, so that’s it.
