That was astounding. Wow. I agree with what @maddiejay and @kari-karast have said, though; I don’t think you necessarily need a happy ending.
Of course, as someone who frequently writes poetry and that poetry is frequently not-too-happy, I could be biased… but I think the important thing, when having dark or sad poetry, is to either give a message of consequences or of hope. I kinda just realized in this moment that that’s what I think, but it’s true for me, at least– poems I write that are dark or sad, I generally want them to either be reflections on difficulty with a mindset of ‘this is the consequence of my actions’, if there is no hope, or with ‘there is still a silver lining’, if there is a message of hope.
Honestly, it’s so strong and powerful when you end it that way, because it’s like… like a wake-up call to the readers. And when I read it, I thought, the ‘happy ending’, or at least the hopefulness, the hope for the future, lies in nearly every single line: the words “I fear”. The fact that the writer is aware of these things being a possibility, and is afraid of them, is hope within itself, because being aware of it and even afraid is the first step to taking action to change it.
Ahem. So. Idk if any of that weird rambling makes sense, but those are my thoughts.
